Not every construction project shapes the future of an entire ecosystem, but the San Dieguito Lagoon Restoration Project, Phase II, stands as a rare and inspiring example. Marathon Construction Corporation proudly celebrates recognition from the American Public Works Association (APWA) San Diego and Imperial Counties Chapter, and is grateful for the opportunity to be part of the project team.
Restoring an Essential Coastal Wetland
The San Dieguito Lagoon, near Del Mar, California, is a vital piece of Southern California’s coastal ecosystem. Over the decades, natural tidal flows have been disrupted, habitats fragmented, and native species pushed into decline, making restoration essential not just for the landscape but for biodiversity, water quality, and coastal resilience.
Phase II of the restoration project focused on the W19 and W6 wetland modules, re-establishing tidal exchange, creating new habitats for endangered species, and enhancing public access in a way that protects sensitive areas. Marathon Construction was selected for this phase because of its proven track record in environmental and marine construction, as well as its ability to navigate complex regulatory and ecological requirements.
A Recognition of Excellence
Winning the APWA Project of the Year Award requires more than technical skill. It demands a project that demonstrates outstanding construction quality, effective management, sustainability practices, and a meaningful positive impact on the community.
The San Dieguito Lagoon Restoration met all these marks. Marathon’s work involved protecting delicate habitats during construction, coordinating closely with multiple resource agencies, and meeting the specified quality and schedule requirements.
Their approach ensured that environmental goals were achieved without sacrificing quality or efficiency, setting a standard for future restoration efforts.
Real Challenges, Real Solutions
Construction within a tidal wetland and food plain brings unique and constant challenges. Tides and storm events can flood work zones, and sensitive species require careful protection throughout the project’s life cycle.
Marathon’s team scheduled work around tidal patterns, constantly monitored and prepared for storm events, used low-impact methods, and collaborated with environmental monitors to minimize disturbance, successfully balancing technical demands with ecological priorities throughout the project.
Working within a heavily regulated space also meant coordinating with a wide network of stakeholders. Marathon’s experience with multi-agency collaboration kept the project on track, ensuring that every milestone was met without compromising environmental standards.
Why the San Dieguito Lagoon Project Matters
Beyond the immediate improvements to habitat and water flow, the restoration of the San Dieguito Lagoon provides lasting benefits for the region. Healthier wetlands support greater biodiversity, offer natural flood protection, and enhance public recreation spaces.
The success of this project illustrates how heavy civil construction, when done thoughtfully and skillfully, can restore critical natural systems while providing tangible benefits to local communities.
A Proud Milestone for Marathon Construction
